What do pharmacists earn in Australia in 2026? It depends on your role, your experience, and — increasingly — where you’re willing to work. This guide sets out indicative pay across community pharmacy, from interns through to pharmacy managers, so pharmacists can benchmark their pay and owners can build a competitive package. Figures are a guide only (see the note on sources at the end).

Pharmacist salary by role (2026)

Role Typical full-time salary
Pharmacy intern $55,000 – $65,000
Newly registered (graduate) pharmacist $70,000 – $80,000
Community / retail pharmacist $75,000 – $95,000
Pharmacist in Charge (PIC) $90,000 – $110,000
Pharmacy manager $100,000 – $135,000
Hospital pharmacist (by grade) $95,000 – $115,000+

Hourly rates

As a rough guide, permanent community pharmacists earn around $42–$48 per hour early in their career, $48–$55 mid-career, and $55–$65 as a senior pharmacist. Locum rates sit higher — commonly $55–$85+ per hour depending on location and urgency. See our dedicated locum pharmacist rates guide for detail.

Salary by location

Location is now one of the biggest levers on pharmacist pay. The further from a capital city, the stronger the package tends to be, because regional and rural pharmacies compete hard for a limited pool of candidates.

Location Indicative full-time salary
Metropolitan (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane) $80,000 – $95,000
Regional centres $90,000 – $105,000
Rural & remote $100,000 – $130,000+ (often plus accommodation)

Rural and remote roles frequently add accommodation or relocation allowances of $10,000–$20,000 on top of base salary.

What affects a pharmacist’s pay

Beyond role and location, the main factors are years of experience, whether you carry Pharmacist-in-Charge or management responsibility, and sector (hospital grades differ from community). On top of base, expect the 12% superannuation guarantee, 17.5% annual leave loading, and penalty rates of roughly 50–100% for weekend and evening work.
