Locum pharmacist rates in Australia have climbed as demand outpaces supply — especially outside the capital cities. This guide sets out what locum pharmacists can expect to earn per hour in 2026, and what pushes a rate up. Figures are a guide only.

Indicative locum pharmacist rates (2026)

Setting Typical hourly rate
Metropolitan community pharmacy $55 – $70 per hour
Regional centres $65 – $80 per hour
Rural & remote $80 – $100+ per hour (plus travel & accommodation)
Short-notice / emergency cover Premium on top of the above

For context, permanent regional pharmacist roles are currently advertised around $70–$75 per hour, so locum rates — which carry no leave or ongoing commitment — generally sit at or above that in regional and remote areas.

What pushes a locum rate up

Four things move the number: location (remoteness commands a premium), urgency (same-week and emergency cover pays more), hours and duration (block bookings vs single days), and on-costs — for rural and remote work, travel and accommodation are typically covered on top of the hourly rate.

Locum rates by state

Rates broadly track the metro-to-remote pattern in every state, with Western Australia’s mining and remote centres often at the top end. See our state locum pages for detail: NSW, Victoria, Queensland, WA and SA.
