Owner guide
How to hire a pharmacist in Australia.
Written by people who do this inside a national network of pharmacies.
The process
Decide what the role actually is before you advertise it
Pharmacist in Charge is not the same job as a community pharmacist, and the difference is legal, not just seniority. Most unfillable ads are unfillable because they describe two jobs and pay for one.
Work out the real cost, not the hourly rate
The Pharmacy Industry Award 2020 sets the floor. Two separate increases landed in 2026 — the annual wage review and a pharmacy-specific gender-undervaluation correction phased across 2025, 2026 and 2027, with the third step still to come on 30 June 2027. What you paid last year is not the number.
Check the register before anything else
Ahpra’s public register is free and takes thirty seconds. Confirm general registration, the category, and any conditions or undertakings. Do it before the interview, not after the offer.
Advertise, then accept that advertising is not sourcing
A SEEK advertisement runs roughly $280 regional to $700 metro and campaigns commonly run eight to twelve weeks. The pharmacists worth hiring are employed and are not reading it. Someone has to go and find them.
Interview twice, and record the first one
Once with whoever is screening, once with the person who will actually work with them. Recording the first interview means the owner hears the candidate rather than a summary of them.
Take written references, not phone calls
A referee completing a structured written form gives you something you can re-read and compare. A phone call gives you someone’s memory of a phone call.
Consider the two candidates you probably dismissed
An intern you train is choosing between you and starting over somewhere they know nobody — and in a rural town two Commonwealth programs will pay up to $30,000 toward it. A pharmacist registered in New Zealand, the UK, Ireland, Canada or the United States is on a short registration pathway with no OPRA and no internship.
Where it goes wrong
The role sat open for five months
The cost of an unfilled pharmacist role is not the fee you saved. It is reduced trading hours, a PIC working six days, and the good staff you still have deciding this is not worth it.
You paid for the advertisement three times
The first ad is usually absorbed in a recruiter’s fee. The second and third are on-charged. A campaign that runs twelve weeks runs out of ad budget before it runs out of time.
You interviewed one candidate and hired them
Not because they were right, but because they were there. This is what a percentage fee quietly encourages in a recruiter, and what an open vacancy encourages in an owner.
You ruled out overseas without checking which register
There is an enormous difference between a Knowledge Stream candidate years from registration and a UK-registered pharmacist one exam away. Treating them as one pool costs you the second group.
Next step
Tell us about the vacancy.
You will get the fee in writing, a view on whether the role is fillable as written, and a realistic time to fill — before you commit to anything.
