Step by step
Hold a current New Zealand annual practising certificate
This is the one thing the whole pathway rests on. Without a current certificate, trans-Tasman recognition is not available to you.
Apply to Ahpra directly
Create an account in the Ahpra practitioner portal, verify your identity with your passport, upload evidence of your New Zealand registration, pay the fee and make the declaration.
Ahpra assesses within 30 days
You are registered in the same category you hold in New Zealand. Any conditions or limitations on your New Zealand registration carry across.
Work rights
New Zealand citizens can work in Australia without a skills assessment. You do not need the Australian Pharmacy Council at all unless you are applying for permanent migration and a department needs the paperwork.
The Australian Pharmacy Council does run a New Zealand Registered Pharmacist Stream at A$1,110 with no exam — but it is explicitly for migration purposes only, not registration. If you are a New Zealand citizen moving for work, you do not need it. Do not buy it because someone told you every overseas pharmacist needs a skills assessment.
Worth knowing
Your conditions travel with you. Ahpra registers you in the same category you hold in New Zealand, and any conditions or limitations on your New Zealand registration carry across to your Australian registration. If you have something on your record, raise it with us early rather than late.
Next step
Register once. We will tell you honestly where you stand.
One form, and it changes depending on where you are registered. No general enquiry inbox, no WhatsApp queue — everyone who registers gets an answer.
