Locum pharmacist rates in Australia (2026).
Locum rates have climbed as demand outruns supply, most of all outside the capital cities. This is what locum pharmacists earn per hour in 2026, what pushes a rate up, and what an owner should actually be quoted. Figures are a guide only.

For context, permanent regional pharmacist roles are currently advertised at around $70–$75 per hour. Locum rates carry no leave and no ongoing commitment, so in regional and remote areas they generally sit at or above that.
What moves it
Four things push a rate up.
Location
Remoteness commands a premium. Western Australia’s mining and remote centres are often at the top end.
Urgency
Same-week and emergency cover pays more.
Hours and duration
A block booking and a single day are priced differently.
On-costs
For rural and remote work, travel and accommodation are usually covered on top of the hourly rate.

What you should actually be quoted.
The most common mistake is comparing agencies on a single figure. There are always two numbers, and they behave completely differently.
- The pharmacist’s rate
- What the locum is paid. It moves with notice, location, day of the week, PIC responsibility and travel. You have very little control over it, and pushing it down is usually how a booking falls over two days before the shift.
- The agency’s fee
- What the agency takes on top. This is the number you can compare between agencies — and the one most will not separate out for you.
A blended hourly figure tells you nothing. If one quote is fifteen dollars an hour above another, you need to know whether that buys a better pharmacist or a bigger margin. Only one of those is worth paying for. Ask for both numbers in writing. We quote them separately as a matter of course.
The competition

Owners assume they are competing with the pharmacy in the next town. Increasingly they are not.
The national healthcare recruiters run pharmacist locum contracts for hospitals, health services and aged care in eight to twelve week blocks, with travel and accommodation provided and no relocation required. That is the offer your Tuesday in a country dispensary is weighed against.
You do not have to match it — plenty of pharmacists prefer community work, shorter commitments and knowing the store — but it explains why a single short-notice day in a remote town is hard to fill.

The award
Where locum rates sit against the award.
Locum engagements are usually casual, and the Pharmacy Industry Award carries a 25% casual loading on the minimum hourly rate. That loading is the floor, not the market. In a shortage the market sets the number and the award only sets the bottom.
What matters for planning is the direction of travel. The pharmacist wage floor is rising on two tracks at once: the Fair Work Commission’s annual wage review, and a 14.1% gender-undervaluation correction for pharmacist and intern classifications, phased in on 30 June 2025, 30 June 2026 and 30 June 2027. The third step has not landed yet. Budget for it.
